Try to anticipate dropping and clearing flows and be on the water when reasonable conditions come together! Classic scenario in the Oak where dirty water color lags behind the highest flows. Land lubbers and small boat casters and small boat trollers and streamer casters all can get in on the cool water near shore action while it lasts. No consistent cool down or big freshets yet so the action has been on and off. Best spoon is a gold laser spook. When high flows drop and/or cold flows warm and/or dirty water clears then anglers who can make good drifts or swings get in on the action. Remember as these kings start to stage that their preferred water temps are also changing. They started in 60 feet of water trolling northwest with cut bait and the reel started screaming. Good drifts on lighter leads are still scoring some hook ups on some dark and slightly silver fish. There is plenty of water cover to hide fish or to encourage any late migrations of browns or early migrations of steelhead. Good high water drifters are getting a few brown trout hook ups each outing by covering some water. Port Bay water is very warm and there has been weed growth near the south end. There was a little bit of snow showers too that is melting off today. The canal season for navigation ended October 13th and some sections are being lowered. For now after the past weekend it looks like flows are back down some in the Oak to about med or slightly high and less stained. Look for better rivermouth and lower river action each day on cool or wet weather. That could be the ticket to get some salmon migrations cranking. High flows can limit the movement of fish, and lower flows can restrict them. If an angler is fishing upstream, they should fish downstream of the other angler or consider fishing another day. Flows likely to remain up and stained at least thru the weekend. The weather was on the warm . Some steelhead and cohos were caught with spoons. These 23 & 25 lb Salmon were caught in 450 to 500 fow.40 to 120 down, using Dipseys 180 to 220 just slightly west of the Oak. Another shot of precipitation from a couple of days ago forecast ahead thru the mid week looks seasonable cool and mostly clear with a slight warm up toward the end of week. Looking out across the water and spotting fish def not as easy as it would be if flows were lower and clearer. One angler for the beginning part of this week reported good action. For now temps are in the high 30s F and falling short of the predicted near 50 F. Look for all the trib flows to be on the rise and going off color. Rain has been slow and steady so look for smaller area trib flows to go high and dirty probably stopping short of blown. Any snow will be likely south of the area.
